Our summer youth lessons have concluded and our students and instructors are headed back to school. We have accomplished soooo much! The “Intro to Racing” took us to the Junior Regattas at CSYC and DYC which included a distance race around Belle Isle. This was no small task for our young sailors, fighting a 2 knot current to move a 420 upstream in relatively light air. They did it! Many thanks to Jill & Roger Hilborn for their help with trailering and the tire replacements needed to make the trailer road worthy. Additional thanks are in order to Lukas and Jacob’s parents for their support with bringing racing back to Junior Sailing.
Just because the youth and adult learn to sail programs are done, doesn’t mean we’re done. There is still soooo much left to do and events to enjoy. Join us for a few more Friday evenings for Fun Sails and $5 hots and brats afterward. We also have a silent auction coming up at the end of Fall Series during the Oktoberfest, 10/18. We would greatly appreciate your donations of gift cards, lottery tickets, wine and other items that would make nice gift basket additions or prizes to bid on. We are here to accept donations on Fun Sail and Fall Series days or drop them off in the office.
Speaking of donations, Art Pruett, a long-time sailor and friend of North Star is donating his Thistle. The Thistle is about 18’ and has an active class here in Lake St. Clair. I have received calls from Dads looking to take Father and son lessons. It’s a tippy boat but I think this is the boat and the answer can now be, “Yes!”
I’ve heard from folks looking for work hours. Yes, you can get work hours for helping Junior Sailing. Our SignUp Genius list is up to date and you may see a couple of interesting slots referring to, “AFW” and “AFB”: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4AABA822A5FDC07-54576715-todo#/ We keep coming up short on safety boats because one or the other is typically in disrepair (or sinking!). Mike Deck found us a deal we couldn’t refuse to cure these situations and make NSJS respectable at the DRYA Junior Sailing Races next summer in our new coach boat. Mike Dooley and Jim Baker are heading up a team to build-out a brand new RIB. Let them know how you can help. Thanks guys!
Remember Amazon Smile? This was quite a boost for Junior Sailing in the day. Well, Kroger is here to fill the void. Jill Hilborn arranged for NSJS to participate in the Kroger Community Rewards Program. It’s easy! Just go to www.KrogerCommunityRewards.com and link your Kroger Shopper’s Card or open your Kroger app and select, “Rewards.” Enroll North Star Junior Sailing in your Community Rewards as your organization of choice with the code JT277. That’s it! There is no cost to enroll and NSJS will earn funding whenever you shop and swipe your Kroger card at checkout.
Save the date:- Next meeting: Monday, September 15th at 7pm at NSSC or tune in virtually via Google Meet: https://meet.google.com/yba-ykuy-hpg?hs=122&authuser=0 for our next NSJS meeting.
